~ Jan-Feb 1957: Martin Luther King becomes president of the SCLC. A major force in organizing civil rights movements.
~ Sep 1957: A formerly all white school in Little Rock Arkansas is integrated, with much protesting.
~ Feb 1960: First sit-in at a segregated lunch counter. Triggered many similar non-violent protests through out the south.
~ May 1961: Freedom riders begin taking bus trips to the South.
~ Oct 1962James Meredith becomes the first black student at the University of Mississippi.
~ April 1963: Martin Luther King is jailed during a civil rights protest; writes famous letter.
~ May 1963: Civil rights protestors in Alabama are brutally attacked which gained sympathy for the civil rights movement.
~ Aug 1963: March to Washington takes place. Martin Luther Kind delivers his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.
~ Jan 1964: Poll Tax is abolished.
~ July 1964: President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibited discrimination of all kinds based on color.
~ Mar 1965: Bloody Sunday; a march to montgomery turns bad when police brutally attack protestors. Helped gain sympathy for the civil rights movement, and helped push through the voting act.
~ July 1967: Major race riots occur.
~ April 1968: Martin Luther King is shot.
~ April 1968: President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1968 further ending discrimination.
